
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, announced Nwosu Isioma Sybil from the Department of Biochemistry as the overall best graduating student (OBGS) for the 2023/2024 academic session with a CGPA of 4.93 at the 28th Convocation Press Conference, held on Thursday, 3rd April 2025, at the Lagos State University (LASU) Senate Building.
The press conference marks the commencement of the 28th convocation ceremony and the fourth consecutive convocation ceremony under the leadership of Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, fnli, fspsp, NPOM.
“This year’s convocation is particularly significant as it marks my fourth consecutive convocation ceremony as Vice-Chancellor. This continuity is a testament to the regularity of our academic calendar, as well as the industrial peace and harmony we have diligently fostered under this administration,” she said.
According to the statistics, a total of 971 diploma students are graduating this year, with 123 distinctions, 550 upper credits, 287 lower credits, and 11 with passes.
For this year’s convocation ceremony, the university is producing 8,711 first-degree graduates, of which 192 students earned First Class Honours, 17 students obtained unclassified degrees (MBBS/BDS), 3,076 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, 4,397 with Second Class Lower Division, 990 with Third Class, and 39 with a pass.
This year’s convocation, just like previous years, is divided into two segments: pre-convocation events and convocation events, which have commenced from today till the 10th of April, 2025.
The Vice-Chancellor also announced the establishment of a new faculty under her administration—the Faculty of Computing. “We have established the Faculty of Computing, which comprises five departments. These departments will offer academic programmes leading to the award of various degrees,” she added.
In a recently released Times Higher Education ranking, Lagos State University was ranked the 5th best university in Nigeria. Additionally, in the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, LASU was ranked the best university in Sub-Saharan Africa for the third consecutive year. The university also received the award for Best University for the Actualization of the SDGs by the ECOWAS Youth Summit (2024).
The Nigerian Copyright Commission has approved LASU’s copyright protection application for five innovative products developed by the Centre of Excellence for Sargassum Research. These animal feeds have also obtained trademark approval from the Ministry of Trade and Investment.
Additionally, LASU has launched its own online meeting application, named TALKSPACE. The application, available on the LASU website, allows for flexible subscriptions by the general public.
